Pingdingshan is located in the central part of Henan Province. The city has a per capita water resource of 449 m³, which is only 1/5 of the national per capita level of 2,100 m³. It is a typical resource-based water-scarce city.
After the implementation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project in 2014, Pingdingshan became the first beneficiary city of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project.

Low-carbon water supply challenges for main water plants
Pingdingshan Water Supply Company was founded in 1958, with an average daily water supply of about 320,000 m³.
It owns five large and medium-sized water plants, including Baiguishan Water Plant, Jiulishan Water Plant, and Jiaozhuang Water Plant, a supporting water plant for the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. It is responsible for supplying most of the city’s production and living water.
Under the “dual carbon background”, how to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Putting green development into practice has become an important test for the company’s high-quality development.

Faced with this challenge, Pingdingshan Water Supply Company, in line with the principle of “saving energy and reducing consumption, repairing old and making use of waste”, constantly explored new measures of “reducing costs and increasing efficiency” from a technical perspective.
Take Jiulishan Water Plant as an example: In order to further explore the potential of energy-saving transformation and reducing power consumption in the plant area, the staff of Pingdingshan Technical Department decided to start with the pumps in the water intake pump room.
The water intake pump room of Jiulishan Water Plant was technically transformed. After inspection, there were 6 water intake pumps in the pump room at that time, which had seriously deviated from the design conditions due to years of operation. The operation energy consumption was high, the efficiency was low, and the pump body was seriously cavitated due to years of disrepair, posing a safety hazard.
Green solution with high efficiency and low consumption
After multiple investigations and demonstrations, Pingdingshan Water Supply Company decided to replace all six pumps in the Jiulishan Water Plant’s water intake pump room with Kaiquan double-suction pumps.
Through transformation and upgrading, we can fundamentally ensure safe production, serve the water safety of the general public in a more green and efficient way, and achieve the goal of “energy saving and consumption reduction”.
Reasons for high energy consumption in pump rooms
According to a large number of engineering practices, the high energy consumption of the pump room operation system is usually due to the following two points:
1. The pump selection does not match the actual demand. Some pump rooms are selected based on the most conservative working conditions during design, and the selected pump head is too high. This causes the operating conditions to deviate from the high-efficiency range, the system efficiency is low and the energy consumption is high.
2. Water supply in the water plant is a dynamic process. The water consumption of the water supply system fluctuates greatly, and the operating conditions of the water pump unit are changeable, and it is impossible to ensure that the pump product is always operating in the high-efficiency area. This will not only cause great energy waste, but also affect the stability of the system.

According to feedback, the project saved 425,700 yuan in electricity bills for Jiulishan Water Plant in the first 7 months alone, significantly improving the economic benefits of the plant.
