Kaiquan Diesel-Electric Fire Pump Units Installed at Qingdao Port’s Dongjiakou Commercial Storage Depot

The 5.2-million-cubic-meter commercial crude oil reserve facility at the Dongjiakou Port Area of ​​Shandong Port Qingdao Port is a key national project for the transition from old to new growth drivers. It represents the largest single-site oil storage complex among China’s coastal ports and is classified as a major hazard installation (Level I).

The facility stores crude oil and refined petroleum products; due to the low flash points and high heat of combustion associated with these products, the overall fire risk is extremely high. Kaiquan supplied an integrated diesel-electric fire pump system for the project’s dedicated fire station, and the system is now fully operational.

01 Dual-power redundancy to meet mandatory safety standards for oil depots

A crude oil fire often requires continuous water spraying for cooling and foam application for extinguishing over a period of 4 to 8 hours. However, the explosions and extreme heat accompanying such fires can easily destroy electrical wiring; if a fire pump relies solely on electricity, a power failure would cause the entire firefighting system to shut down immediately.

National regulations clearly mandate that large-scale oil depots of this class must be equipped with both electric main pumps and diesel backup pumps, ensuring safety does not hinge on a single power supply line.

Kaiquan’s dual-power solution operates based on a clear and reliable logic:

✅ Under normal conditions, the electric pump maintains system pressure and supplies water for routine needs, such as inspections, sprinkler systems, and fire hydrants;

✅ In the event of a power outage or electric pump failure—causing pipeline pressure to drop below the threshold—the diesel pump starts automatically within 20 seconds, requiring no manual intervention;

✅ The diesel engine features an independent, high-capacity fuel tank capable of over 6 hours of continuous operation when fully fueled, fully covering the critical water supply window for firefighting;

✅ The pump unit utilizes Kaiquan’s proprietary high-efficiency double-suction hydraulic impeller, achieving a hydraulic efficiency exceeding 83%—far above the industry average. Even under heavy-load conditions—such as simultaneous cooling of multiple tanks and coordinated operation of multiple long-range fire monitors—the system maintains stable, high-flow, and high-pressure output, ensuring a constant foam mixing ratio and uninterrupted firefighting performance.

02 Adapted for High-Risk Coastal Environments with Enhanced Protection

Dongjiakou Port Area is situated in a coastal region where high humidity and high salt-spray levels significantly accelerate the corrosion and aging of standard equipment. Furthermore, the oil storage zone is classified as a high-risk, explosion-proof area, imposing stringent safety requirements on the equipment.

Kaiquan implemented comprehensive, specialized optimizations for this project’s specific conditions:

✅ Core flow-path components are made of 316L stainless steel; the entire unit features a heavy-duty anti-corrosion epoxy coating, and the electrical control system is sealed against moisture. These measures effectively resist salt-spray and humidity, ensuring long-term, stable operation.

✅ The entire unit complies with explosion-proof standards for oil storage zones, eliminating the risk of ignition from electrical sparks and fully meeting safety requirements for hazardous area zoning.

✅ The diesel engine and pump body utilize an elastic direct-coupling structure mounted on an integrated base; this design minimizes vibration and noise, ensuring no interference with on-site emergency command and communication.

03 Intelligent O&M for Reliable Long-Term Standby

The core requirement for fire pumps is “long-term standby with guaranteed performance upon activation”—they remain idle most of the time but must start instantly and operate stably during an emergency. Prolonged inactivity can lead to issues like bearing corrosion or component seizure; failure at a critical moment could have catastrophic consequences.

The Kaiquan unit is equipped with the KQK910 intelligent fire control cabinet, enabling comprehensive automated operation and maintenance:

✅ Performs daily automatic inspections and shaft rotation, along with self-checks for oil pressure, voltage, and pipeline sealing integrity, providing early warnings for any anomalies.

✅ Stores operational data locally while simultaneously uploading it to the cloud, allowing the fire station’s central control room to monitor the unit’s status in real-time; three consecutive start-up failures trigger both visual and audible alarms, with notifications simultaneously sent to the command platform.

The entire unit has now been integrated with the storage zone’s foam extinguishing, tank cooling water spray, and automatic fire alarm systems. During multiple live-action fire drills—including simulated power outage scenarios—the diesel pump demonstrated stable start-up and water supply responses, meeting all switching-time standards. Pipeline pressure remained steady during simultaneous multi-system water supply operations, effectively supporting complex fire-handling scenarios that require coordinated protection across multiple tanks. For this large-scale storage facility with a total tank capacity of 5.2 million cubic meters, fire pumps serve as the most “silent” line of defense—standing by quietly in daily operations yet proving absolutely reliable and capable when the critical moment arrives.
